I played this game as "greedy greedy" first in the 1980s. My husband knew of the same game and called it Hot Dice. I found a computer version of hot dice online in the early to mid 2000s that was great fun and just as described above except straight was 2500pts, 5 non-scoring rolls in a row was -1,000pts, there were different additional scoring options for 4 of a kind and 5 of a kind, and pairs did not count. We decided to go with those rules since neither of us could remember the rules really. I have also heard throwing 3 pairs is called boxcars but only if they are 3 consecutive pairs: 1s, 2s, and 3s; or 2s,3s,and 4s; or 3s,4s, and 5s and so on.

I've been playing this game for almost 30 years, but I had NO IDEA it was called Farkle! Grandma taught it to us as "German Craps," as she was taught as a little girl, but it's definitely the same game. I don't think I've known a single person who knows this game by its commercial name. In fact, the thing we all love most about it is that you don't need anything beyond 6 dice and scrap paper!

My little sister taught our family Farkel back in 1988. We have enjoyed it ever since. I taught it to my students, but changed the name to Zapped to avoid the bathroom humor (Boys can be rather silly in 5th and 6th grade). The kids loved it.

Our version uses six dice. The minimum to get on the board is 600 points with a minimum of 300 points for every other turn that follows, only the large straight counts for points (1500), three of a kind is scored the same as listed in this site's rules, but we have no add-on scores for additional same numbers thrown during additional rolls. Three ones equal 1,000 points. When all six dice have been used as point makers then they may all be thrown again with play continuing with points being added or a Farkel occurs. This cycle can continue as long as one's luck lasts. Once a player reaches 10,000 points or more then remaining players have one more opportunity to best that score. Our version makes it harder to get to 10,000 and can make for longer games, but what I was able to teach students about probability, decision making, patience, flexibility, losing, and sportmanship has been invaluable over the years; not to mention mental math and addition pracitice.

I have played Farkel with friends on planes, in airports, at conferences and workshops, in restaurants and cafes, traveling in cars, and even on the ferry going to and from Martha's Vineyard. I have played Farkel in most of the major cities in this country. I have even taught my family's version in professional development training to fellow math teachers. It is the best most portable game ever... six dice, a piece of paper, a pen or pencil, and at least one friend or family member willing to take time to have fun. Farkel rocks.

I do not have time to read all of the comments above. The original rule for a straight was to roll 1-2-3-4-5-6. However many points you count if you roll a 1-2-2-4-5-6 can you pick up the odd 2 and roll it hoping for a 3? In the years we have played other players allow one more roll and then score a portion of the regular score.
Even if you rolled a 1 or a 5 a third roll was not an option. I like the rogue rule of allowing one roll of the odd die with a lower score. Opinions?
